Review: “Words Matter” at Arthouse, Marble Falls

Glasstire, the Texas visual art publication, ran a full critical review of Words Matter, the first exhibition drawn from the Klein collection.

Courtney Thomas follows the hang from Terry Allen’s eyes and ears through to what she calls the politics corner, reading the show as a conversation between image and language rather than a themed selection of text pieces. She writes about Jenny Holzer’s truisms cut into marble and printed on wood, Ed Ruscha’s typographic paintings, Faith Ringgold’s Hate is Sin, Russell Young’s Martin Luther King Jr. mugshot, Nicholas Galanin’s Indianland photograph, and work by Shirin Neshat, Robert Rauschenberg and Jose Toirac.

Thomas calls the Klein collection excellent and credits the curation for reaching past the obvious, taking in work that runs from major names to what she describes as “borderline kitsch.” Her verdict is that the inaugural show sets a high bar for the exhibitions that follow.
